On September 24, 2007, Tyson pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine and driving under the influence. He was convicted of these charges in November 2007 and sentenced to 24 hours in jail. After his release, he was ordered to serve three years’ probation and complete 360 hours of community service. Prosecutors had requested a year-long jail sentence, but the judge praised Tyson for seeking help with his drug problems. On November 11, 2009, Tyson was arrested after getting into a scuffle at Los Angeles International airport with a photographer. No charges were filed.
According to Heavy, Mike Tyson told the Impaulsive with Logan Paul podcast that he was arrested 40 times before the age of 12 while growing up in Brooklyn. He said that he committed “burglaries, pick-pocketing, snatching jewelry… One-punch knockout and then go in their pocket, robbery.”
The legal action renewed claims of cultural appropriation but also saw some Māori tā moko artists defend Whitmill. Legal scholars have highlighted how the case juxtaposes Māori and Anglo-American attitudes on ownership of images. Despite never making it to trial, the case has been widely discussed in the context of the copyrightability of tattoos, a matter which has never been fully resolved in the United States.
Arriving at his house early on a cold but bright day, I was welcomed by his very friendly wife Kiki. By all accounts, she has played a crucial part in his reinvention and was instrumental in setting up this exclusive meeting with him for The Sportsman. Their large, luxurious house sits on the hills above Newport Beach in a quiet, gated community. He is as professional as during his usa boxing masters division rules days, displaying an intensity and charisma equal to those of the biggest movie stars.
With Zhang just pawing away at him, Parker continued to launch a series of hard right hands and then ducking to avoid at the few punches coming back at him. That all changed in the eighth round when Zhang plodded forward and he stepped into an exchange with a right hand that bounced off the side of Parker’s head and sent him down to a knee.
But if people thought that he had slowed down or shrugged off his capacity for the outrageous, they were wrong. In March of 1999 he spent a short time in jail after pleading no contest to two misdemeanor assault charges stemming from a road rage incident. Then, after defeating Lou Savarese in 38 seconds in the summer of 2000, his post-fight behavior and remarks again drew worldwide attention. After the referee stopped the bout, Tyson continued to pound Savarese and even hit the referee with a wild shot. Then outside the ring immediately after the fight he told the assembled media, according to the ESPN website, “I am the most ruthless, brutal champion ever.” Tyson continued, “I am Sonny Liston and Jack Dempsey. There is no one who can match me.” But he saved his most bizarre remarks for a possible future opponent, heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis. According to the ESPN website, Tyson’s message for Lewis was this: “I want your heart. I want to eat your children.” Tyson then added that when he fought Lewis, “I will rip out his heart and feed it to him.” Ironically, he admitted later that he was not ready for Lewis yet.
Instead, the artist suggested a Maori tribal design on just the left side of his face. Tyson agreed to it and said he loves it. “It looks awesome,” he said. “That tattoo is me. Sometimes I see people with tattoos on their face and I’m like: ‘Woah, this guy is crazy!’ I forget that I’ve got one on my face.”
BoxRec currently ranks Tyson at number 20 among the greatest boxers that had their last fight at heavyweight. In The Ring magazine’s list of the 80 Best Fighters of the Last 80 Years, released in 2002, Tyson was ranked at number 72. He is ranked number 16 on The Ring magazine’s 2003 list of 100 greatest punchers of all time. Tyson has defeated 11 boxers for the world heavyweight title, the seventh-most in history.
While the outcome of the case was not precedential, Perry’s comments were the first time that a government official commented on the copyrightability of tattoos. They were also significant in drawing a distinction between the tattoo’s design and application. Despite the case settling, it prompted further discussion of the topic and speculation as to how the case might have proceeded if it had gone to trial.
In the co-main event, Mikaela Mayer returned to winning ways with a unanimous decision victory over late replacement Lucy Wildheart to win the interim WBC lightweight title, putting her in the mix for a shot at pound-for-pound superstar Katie Taylor.
